If we want students using the target language at the start of a new year (especially at the novice level), then we have to have resources to encourage it. I’d ask students “¿Cómo estás?” and most really wanted to answer me in Spanish. Without help though, they’d scramble up the easiest response (bien) OR jump right to English. Kara’s posted about this before, and we both think we can push them “Beyond Bien.“
You don’t even have to pre-teach the vocab in a big lesson with all the ways to answer the “How are you?” question. Emojis are a language kids already understand so they can figure things out… no English necessary! Hang today’s free download near the spot where you normally greet them and give them a chance to learn a little every day!

Download these posters in Spanish, German or French. (Merci, Megan H.)
how do you download? there is no download place.
Hi, Vernice. Click “Spanish” or “French” (in the blue text from the last sentence of the post). That will take you to our Mercado. Then click “add to cart” and checkout.
Let me know if that helps!
It’s not working for me. I would love to download this…
I added a download button right on this page to make it a little easier. Just choose Spanish (SP) or French (FR) and click the green button and the download will open right up so you can print or save.
Love your ideas!
¡Gracias amigas! ¿Qué tal?
¡Hola, Alice! All good here! Hope you’re doing well and have a GREAT year, amiga!
