For the food unit, I offer a homework stamp if they go to a Hispanic restaurant and order in Spanish.
For our fiesta on the last day, I offer 1-2 extra credit points for students who make an authentic recipe or bring an authentic food from one of the local Hispanic markets. (I provide recipe links and a map to the closest market on our Moodle page to encourage them.) The students who visit a market always enjoy it!
I have the students find 5 Spanish songs to listen to and then choose 1 of the 5 to look up the lyrics for and do a short activity. More information, plus the assignment posted here: http://spanishplans.org/2012/03/06/exploring-spanish/
One of my homework options for our shopping unit is to use the self checkout in Spanish at Walmart or krogers. I have them snap a picture with their face by the screen to prove they do it.
*once they gave tried it, many do it again. They know they can do it so show off a little with their moms or friends!
Ooh, fun idea! I’m thinking about making a “Bingo sheet” of authentic homework options next year (like your stamp sheet but divided by listening / speaking / reading / writing and students will have to choose some of each), and this is definitely one I’m going to include! (A kind of related one is setting their Facebook / iPod / phone to Spanish for one week — it’s amazing how many random new words I’ve learned by keeping my stuff all set in Spanish, and I’m sure the students will find that the same thing happens to them!)
What do you think about them taking photos of fruits, veggies, etc. from Hispanic countries? I noticed that my pineapple says Costa Rica.
Awesome idea and very accessible to anyone who can get to a supermarket!
I really like this idea! Many of my students live in absolute poverty and coming from a similar childhood, I know that most can’t afford to eat out or by food to make a whole meal, but anyone can buy some chicle in Spanish 🙂
The students have to call their “abuela” and apologize for not calling for two weeks. They have to explain that their crazy school schedule, and extracurricular activities are keeping them busy. They call my google voice account to do this
I love Google voice! I had my Spanish 1 kids reply to my party invitation. They had to tell me what they were going to bring or an explanation of why they couldn’t come.
So doing this tomorrow! We are learning about celebrations/parties. I think I’ll create a scenario like “I’m throwing a surprise party for ___ so let’s make the plans in Spanish to keep it a secret.”
I just created a google voice account and I’m very excited to use it! As always, thank you for the ideas!!
Homework assignment: Watch a television show or movie in Spanish. Summarize what happened in at least five sentences. Write down words you heard and understood from class. Write a reaction (2 paragraphs) explaining what you learned from the experience, how you can improve your comprehension skills, and what it may feel like to live as a non-native speaker in a country where Spanish is spoken. 3 paragraphs total
Hey ladies-
love your ingenuity and bought some of the Real World homework sheets. I was looking for the Sports/Medical one but can’t seem to find it. Is it available?
thanks,
Donna
Hi Donna! Looks like I forgot to add that one on our Mercado. It is on our TPT page if you want it ASAP, otherwise I will load it this week. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Creative-Language-Class
Thanks for the compliments!
